Coach's Corner With Steve Rodriguez
Nov. 16, 2010
MALIBU, Calif. - With the fall season now complete, Waves' head baseball coach Steve Rodriguez had time to sit down with Director of Pepperdine Sports Production Kira Elste to talk about this past season's highlights, players, assistant coaches and his program philosophy on his premiere episode of Coach's Corner
Rodriguez' team recently finished its offseason this past weekend with Blue winning the annual fall intrasquad World Series, 3-2, over Orange. Blue won the fifth and final game of the series on a walk-off walk and captured the tiebreaker after junior catcher Nate Johnson tagged the potential game-tying run out at home plate.
The 2011 Waves are expected to return six position players from last season in addition to veteran starting pitchers Aaron Gates and Keven Inman and reliever Ricky Villarreal.
To help fill the void left by the graduated corner infielders and drafted weekend rotation, Pepperdine's coaching staff brought in 13 newcomers to compete for a spot in the starting lineup. This crop of rookies includes heralded high school talents Scott Frazier, Brian Langlois, Eric Karch and Matt Maurer plus junior college transfers Jon Moscot, Tony Cooper and Zach Turner.
The Pepperdine Waves begin their 2011 season on Feb. 19 with a three-game series vs. Eastern Kentucky.
