Waves Baseball Summer Update
July 15, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – It has been a busy summer for Pepperdine Baseball. Below is a look at Waves in the Major League Baseball Draft, Waves squaring off against each other in the Cape Cod Baseball League and Pepperdine players competing in summer league action.
WAVES IN THE 2013 MLB DRAFT: Here is a quick update on Pepperdine in the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Overall, four Waves were selected, headlined by righthander Scott Frazier in the sixth round by the Chicago Cubs. All members of Pepperdine’s 2013 starting rotation were drafted along with the team’s closer.
Righthander Corey Miller (Milwaukee Brewers, 16th) and lefthander Aaron Brown (Cleveland, 30th) did not sign professional contracts and will headline the Waves rotation in 2014. Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) enjoyed a strong junior campaign, leading the Pepperdine rotation in ERA (2.71) and innings (89.2). The righthander posted a 5-5 record overall, 3-3 during league play. Miller struck out 67 and walked a rotation-low 26. A preseason All-American, Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) battled through an injury to lead the team in wins (6), including victories in five consecutive starts. In perhaps the finest outing of his career, Brown stymied eventual league champion Gonzaga (4/21), tossing a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) off six hits and struck out five Bulldogs.
Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) signed with the Cubs and Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) signed with the Atlanta Braves after being tabbed in the 16th round. Additionally, prospective Wave Jamie Westbrook signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks after being selected in the fifth round out of Basha High School (Arizona).
WAVES ON WAVES: Sunday Three Waves converged in a game when Orleans traveled to take on the Brewster Whitecaps in Cape Cod Baseball League action. Lefthander Aaron Brown started for the Whitecaps against the Firebirds featuring third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS). Righthander Corey Miller was originally scheduled to start for Orleans, but was pushed back. Brewster seized a 11-3 win as Brown collected the win, tossing five innings, allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Davidson went 3-for-5 with an RBI, boosting his season average to .294.
LANGOLOIS NAMED TO CAL LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME: Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) is constructing a strong summer for the Conejo Oaks in the California Collegiate League and earned a selection to the All Star Game July 17. Langlois is hitting .287 with eight doubles, triple, five home runs and 26 RBI for the Oaks, who 15-11 record good for a share of third place in the North Division of the CCL. Compton, CA, 90221. Game time is 7PM.
