COMPLETE 2013 MLB DRAFT TRACKER

MALIBU, Calif. – Three members of Pepperdine’s pitching staff were selected Saturday in the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. This brings the total of current Waves selected to four with every member of the starting rotation hearing their name called along with the club’s closer.

Pepperdine’s Saturday starter righthander Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Serra HS) was the first to go in the 16th round with the 482nd pick to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Waves closer, righthander Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), went 11 picks later to the Atlanta Braves. Sunday starter, lefthander  Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) was the final Wave to go after Cleveland used the 891st pick in the 30th round.

This trio of Waves joins Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) who went early on day two to the Chicago Cubs with the 168th pick in the sixth round. Every Wave drafted earned All-West Coast Conference honors in 2013.

Miller enjoyed a strong junior campaign, leading the Pepperdine rotation in ERA (2.71) and innings (89.2). The righthander posted a 5-5 record overall, 3-3 during league play. Miller struck out 67 and walked a rotation-low 26. Miller tossed a complete game gem against Loyola Marymount (3/16) allowing one run off six hits with seven strikeouts and went a remarkable 10.0 innings in a no-decision against Washington (4/7), allowing just three hits while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts, good for WCC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Swanner led the league in saves (14) and gave up runs in just two of his 15 outings as a junior. The righthander posted 1-1 record with a 1.50 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 24.0 innings. Opposing batters hit just .165 against him. A member of the 2013 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List, Swanner finished the regular season ranked fourth in Pepperdine single-season history in saves.

A preseason All-American, Brown battled through an injury to lead the team in wins (6), including victories in five consecutive starts. In perhaps the finest outing of his career, Brown stymied eventual league champion Gonzaga (4/21), tossing a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) off six hits and struck out five Bulldogs. Brown set a career-high for strikeouts with nine in a win at Brigham Young (3/30). For the season, Brown posted a 4.95 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 72.2 innings and batted .313 with two doubles, two home runs and three RBI in 48 at-bats.
