Vincej Named a Finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award; Sever Earned All-America Honors

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine shortstop Zach Vincej has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious Brooks Wallace award, given to the nation's top shortstop by the College Baseball Hall of Fame, while his double play mate, second baseman Joe Sever, was named a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) was recently named a the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the season second on the team with a .339 batting average and a .410 on base percentage. He fielded an impressive .986, making only four errors and turning 38 double plays with his teammate Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep). Vincej also earned WCC all-conference honors for the first time since his freshman campaign. The other four finalists are Chris Diaz of North Carolina State, Anthony Gomez of Vanderbilt, Alex Mejia of Arizona and Eastern Kentucky's Richie Rodriguez.

Sever has been the focal point of the Waves batting order, hitting in the three slot every game this season. He finished the year with a .366 batting average and 53 RBI. He finished among the conference leaders in multiple categories, including leading the way with a .417 average in WCC play. Sever was also tops with 40 conference hits and 10 doubles. He notched a pair of home runs and 10 doubles--good for a .583 slugging percentage. Despite frequently being pitched around in key situations, he drove in 23 runs to lead the Waves and scored 20. Sever also contributed with the leather, finishing conference play flawless on defense as half of the top double play tandem in the conference. Sever was also named to the All-Conference team for the third time in his career. The All-American selection is the first of Sever's career and he becomes the first Wave to be named a Collegiate Baseball All-American since Eric Thames earned the honor in 2008.
