Pepperdine Defeats Portland 5-1 Saturday Afternoon

Portland, Ore. - Senior right hander Kea Kometani allowed one run and struck out seven over 7.1 innings and freshman right hander Doug Konoske .worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to help Pepperdine to a 5-1 victory over Portland Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of a three-game West Coast Conference (WCC) series at Pilot Stadium.
The win was the Waves' second straight over the Pilots and improved their record to a 29-17 overall and 15-7 in WCC. Pepperdine remains 1.5 games behind West Division-leading San Francisco (33-14, 16-6) which defeated Santa Clara 5-3 on Saturday.
Pepperdine and Portland (14-31, 5-17) were tied 1-1 after two innings and the Waves took a 2-1 advantage in the third when they scored an unearned run in the third inning.
Junior second baseman David Uribes, who singled with one out, moved to second on a single by Adrian Ortiz and reached third when Chad Tracy reached on fielder's choice, scored when Portland catcher Riley Snell's throw went into center field attempting to throw out Tracy at second base on a steal attempt.
The Waves three runs in ninth to take a 5-1 lead on RBI singles by Jason Dominguez, Patrick Rooney and Justin Sandberg.
In his 7.1 innings of work, Kometani (8-4) scattered seven hits, allowed a run, walked two and struck out seven.
Konoske allowed one hit and struck out two to earn his third save of the season.
Pepperdine will go for the series sweep in Sunday's series finale that begins at 1 p.m.
