Michael Swanner Named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List
May 2, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Junior righthander Michael Swanner was added to the 2013 NCWBA Stopper of the Year Watch List and celebrated by collecting his West Coast Conference-leading 11th save of the season Wednesday against Cal Poly. Swanner is one of 51 closers eligible to win the prestigious award presented annually since 2004.
Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) collected his 11th save of the season in his 17th relief outing of the year. Swanner, who has only allowed runs in one outing this season – three runs (two earned) at No. 9 Oklahoma (3/3/13) – leads the Waves in ERA (1.00) and owns a 19/7 strikeout to walk ratio. In addition, the Wave reliever ranks No. 12 nationally among NCAA Division I saves leaders.
Opponents hit just .145 against Swanner and he has allowed 19 hits as a junior and just one for extra bases – a double. During WCC play he has been even stingier, posting a 0.00 ERA in 5.1 innings and has allowed just two hits to league foes en route to five conference saves. League opponents bat just .111.
With three weeks remaining in the regular season, Swanner shares fifth place on the Pepperdine single-season saves chart with 11, accomplished most recently by Freshman All-American Brett Hunter in 2006. The all-time leader is Jay Gehrke, who collected 18 saves in 31 appearances in 1999.
Swanner matched a season-high with three strikeouts at USC (3/12) and at Brigham Young (3/30) and collected saves against ranked opponents at No. 24 Texas A&M (2/22, 2/24) at No. 23 Cal Poly (3/26) and against the No. 24 Mustangs (5/1).
