MALIBU, Calif. Â Waves’ pitchers allowed only four hits and the #13 Pepperdine baseball team recorded a 6-2 win over UCLA on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine improved to 26-13 (8-3 WCC) with the win, while UCLA dropped to 22-18. The Waves moved to 18-3 at home with the victory.
The Bruins got on the board in the third inning on a Waves’ fielding error to make it a 1-0 contest, but Pepperdine responded in their half of the third on Matt Aidem’s (Valencia, Calif./UC Santa Barbara/Valencia HS) three-run homer, a shot to right field that went off the Waves’ scoreboard, to give Pepperdine a 3-1 lead. The Waves then tacked on a pair on a wild pitch and a double play that scored Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) to make it a 5-1 game after three innings.
The Waves added a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) to extend Pepperdine’s lead to 6-1.
The score remained at 6-1 until the Bruins loaded the bases in the ninth inning with no outs before Nick Gaudi (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete HS) came in to get the Waves out of the jam. After a strikeout, Gaudi allowed a run to score on an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game, but he then notched another strikeout and induced a flyout to seal Pepperdine’s 6-2 win and record his 10th save of the season.
Freshman Scott Alexander (Windsor, Calif./Cardinal Newman HS) improved to 5-2 with the win after tossing four innings in relief in his first appearance out of the bullpen this season. Bruins’ starter Garrett Claypool incurred the loss for UCLA. Pepperdine starter Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) pitched well but did not factor in the decision after only tossing four innings. Bywater allowed one run on two hits while fanning two.
Aidem led the Waves with three RBI, and five others notched one hit each for the Waves. Four different Bruins each notched one hit for UCLA.
Up next, the Waves will face UC Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, Calif. tomorrow at 2 p.m.
