Waves Drop 6-3 Decision to Gonzaga
Pepperdine (17-8, 1-1 WCC) and Gonzaga (16-11, 1-1 WCC) were originally scheduled to play a three-game series, but it was shortened to two games after inclement weather affected the Northwest throughout the weekend.
Gonzaga got on the board first in the third inning on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead, and then added three more in the fifth on a three-run homer from Marcus McKimmey to expand its lead to 4-0.
The Bulldogs then tacked on two more in the sixth on a two-run home run from Mark Castellitto to make it a 6-0 game, but the Waves answered in the top of the seventh on an RBI singles from Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) and a sac fly from Nate Simon (Duvall, Wash./Tulane) to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Pepperdine attempted to rally in the ninth inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Bulldogs escaped without allowing any runs to score, claiming the 6-3 win.
