Cook Pitches Two-Hitter in 4-0 Loss at USD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Pepperdine redshirt freshman Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) pitched a complete game two-hitter Saturday at San Diego; however, those two hits led to three runs in a 4-0 loss to the Toreros.

Cook surrendered a two-RBI double to Steven Chatwood in the fifth and Bryan Haar's solo home run in the seventh. In between hits, Cook struck out five, walked four and hit one batter that initiated the decisive fifth inning.

Cook was cruising through the Torero's lineup until the fifth, having retired the previous 11 batters before hitting James Meador with a pitch to start the inning. The HBP was followed by two bases on balls that set the stage for Chatwood's game-winning blow.

That would be the only hit USD would need as Torero starter Matt Thomson struck out 10 Waves in his own complete-game two-hit shutout effort. The lone hits Thomson allowed were a pair of singles by junior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS); he also walked Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) on two occasions.

Pepperdine will look to salvage the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Gates will start for the Waves.
