Waves Drop 9-7 Contest to #25 Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – #16 Pepperdine jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but was unable to hold off #25 Oregon State, as the Beavers rallied to claim a 9-7 win on Friday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

Pepperdine knocked Beavers’ starter Josh Osich out of the game after just one-plus inning, scoring four runs in the second inning to give the Waves a 4-0 lead. Bryce Mendonca (San Leandro, Calif./Chabot JC) began the damage with a two-run double down the right field line, and Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) each registered sac flys to account for the other two runs. Oregon State responded in their half of the second with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Pepperdine added on to their lead in the fourth inning, first scoring on an RBI groundout from Travis Tartamella (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) before Nate Simon’s (Duvall, Wash./Tulane) two-run home run, his first of the season, a towering shot to right-center field that went over the Beavers’ scoreboard to give the Waves a 7-1 lead.

Oregon State pushed across four runs in the fifth on a two-run homer from Chris Hopkins and a two-run single from Drew George to cut Pepperdine’s lead to 7-5, and then took the lead in the sixth on a two-run single and a Pepperdine error to lead 8-7 after six innings.

The Beavers added a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to increase their lead to 9-7, and the Waves went in order in the ninth to give the Beavers the come-from-behind victory.

Doug Konoske (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) incurred the loss for the Waves, while Greg Peavey improved to 1-1 with the victory. Kevin Rhoderick pitched a scoreless ninth for the Beavers to record his fifth save of the year.

Simon went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and RBI, Mendonca recorded two RBI, and Diedrich extended his hitting streak to six games. Daniel Robertson and George each notched three hits for Oregon State.

The Waves and Beavers will play their series-finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.
