Waves Fall to #10 UCLA, 11-3


LOS ANGELES – The #17 Pepperdine baseball team yielded 14 hits as they fell to #10 UCLA 11-3 on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Std in Los Angeles.


Pepperdine drops to 10-4 with the loss while the Bruins improved to 8-4.


Pepperdine starter Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and UCLA Starter Justin Uribe traded zeroes the first three innings, until the Bruins scored five runs in the fourth inning on a three RBI singles and a two-run double, making it 5-0 in favor of UCLA. The Bruins added a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run homer and tacked on another run in the seventh on a sac fly, making it 8-0.


Pepperdine got on the board in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Eric Thames (San Jose, Calif./West Valley JC/Bellarmine Prep), a sac fly from Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and an RBI single from Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Bruins answered with three runs of their own in the eighth on two home runs to push the lead to 11-3. Pepperdine notched a pair of hits in the ninth, but was unable to push any runs across, as UCLA sealed the win.


Bywater fell to 2-1 with the loss while Uribe improved to 2-0. 


The Waves offense was led by David Harris (Glendora, Calif./Santa Barbara JC), who managed three hits, Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), who went 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Heroy, who went 1-for 3 with one RBI.


Up next, the Waves host Western Illinois tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Eddy D Field Stadium.
