BASEBALL ALMANAC
THIS WEEK FOR THE WAVES: Pepperdine wraps up its seven-game road trip with a tough three-game series at No. 10 Oklahoma, beginning Friday afternoon in Norman at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Waves are taking on the Sooners in a series for the second consecutive year and opened the 2012 campaign with a 2-1 series win in Malibu at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
WAVES AT SOONERS
- The Waves and Sooners square off for the second straight season in a three-game series.
- Pepperdine posted a 2-1 series victory vs. then-No. 14 Oklahoma last season at Eddy D. Field Stadium (3-4, 10-0, 7-6 (8)).
- James Grandpre enjoyed a strong series vs. Oklahoma, batting .400 (4-10) with a pair of RBI.
- RHP Scott Frazier tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts.
- RHP Michael Swanner earned a relief victory.
- The Sooners hit .242 in the series against the Waves and recorded four extra base hits. Oklahoma pitching posted a 7.12 ERA in the three games.
- Pepperdine won the first meeting between the two schools in a 10-1 triumph to open the 1988 Tempe Regional. The Waves won their opening three games in the Regional before being eliminated in consecutive losses to host Arizona State.
- Pepperdine is playing its second straight Big 12 opponent on the road. The Waves lost 5-4 at Baylor on Tuesday in Waco, Texas.

- Oklahoma posted a 42-25 record and marched to the Columbia Super Regional last season.

A LOOK AT THE WAVES
- Entering the series against No. 10 Oklahoma, Pepperdine will play a total of eight straight games vs. top-25 opponents.
- Pepperdine opened the season at 4-0 for the first time since 2001 after sweeping Western Michigan.
- Waves entered the preseason ranked No. 40 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and are in the receiving votes category in the USA Today and NCBWA polls.
- Waves picked second in the 2013 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
- Pepperdine picked fifth in 2012 preseason poll and won the WCC title for the first time since 2008.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WAVES
- After two comeback wins in Texas, Pepperdine could not make it three as Baylor overcame a 4-0 deficit for a walk-off 5-4 win Tuesday night.
- Pepperdine scored four runs in the fourth but could not hold.
- The Waves managed a season-low three hits in the contest.
- Matt Maurer struck out five in 6.2 innings
- Nate Johnson collected his team-leading fifth double of the year.
TEXAS A&M SERIES RECAP
- The Waves took their second straight series and first road decisions at Texas A&M.
- Both of Pepperdine’s victories were comebacks. The Waves tacked on the winning run Sunday in the ninth in a 2-1 win and plated three in the eighth of a 5-3 triumph.
- Pepperdine was swept last season at home by the Aggies.
- Friday’s 5-3 win was the first vs. the SEC since taking a 4-3 victory vs. Arkansas in the 2008 Stanford Regional.
- Eric Karch (3-0) collected both wins in relief and Michael Swanner posted saves in both.
ROTATION NOTES
- The Waves lead the WCC in team ERA (2.75) and innings (78.2) and rate second in strikeouts (68).
- Pepperdine’s weekend starting rotation enters the series at No. 10 Oklahoma with a staff ERA of 2.21, allowing nine earned runs off 34 hits in 36.2 innings and owns a strikeout/walk ratio of 30/7.
- The Waves staff has allowed five extra base hits in 2013.
- Jr. RHP Scott Frazier posted his 10th career win at Texas A&M (2/22)
- Fr. LHP Jackson McClelland earned his first career victory vs. Western Michigan (2/16)
FROM THE BULLPEN
- Jr. RHP Eric Karch collected a pair of victories in relief at Texas A&M and now has 10 career wins for the Waves.
- Karch leads Pepperdine in wins (3) and appearances (6)
- Jr. RHP Michael Swanner collected his 10th career save at Texas A&M Sunday and had two in the series vs. the Aggies.
- Swanner leads Pepperdine in saves (2) and leads all relievers in strikeouts (7)
HITTING NOTES
- Pepperdine leads the WCC in doubles (23) and is second in hits (81).
- Sr. 1B Sam Meyer saw a 12-game hitting streak (dating to last season) come to an end with a 0-for-3 day at Baylor (2/26).
- After receiving just five at-bats in limited action during his first two seasons with the Waves, Jr. OF Ranny Lowe is capitalizing on his opportunity, batting a team-high .355 with two doubles and seven RBI.
- Fr. DH David Oppenheim has contributed for the Waves and is hitting .333 with two RBI in his first two weeks at the collegiate level.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
- Pepperdine leads the WCC in fielding percentage (.983) and has committed a league-low nine errors.
- The Waves are starting a pair of true freshman up the middle this season: Fr. 2B Hutton Moyer and Fr. SS Cody Nulph. The duo has committed just two errors this season while combining on nine double plays.
- Moyer is the son of veteran MLB pitcher Jamie Moyer.
WELCOME BACK NATE
- After missing 2012 with an injury, Nate Johnson is off to a fast start and leads the team in doubles (5) and is batting .346 with four RBI.
- The senior C has thrown out three baserunners.
Sam Meyer - WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Waves 1B captures first career WCC weekly honor, batting .467 (7-15) with three doubles, home run and eight RBI vs. Western Michigan.
- Meyer posted a slugging percentage of .867 and scored six runs to open senior season.
WAVES AT THE 2012 NCAA REGIONAL
- Pepperdine competed in its first NCAA Regional since 2008 when it traveled to Palo Alto for the Stanford Regional at Sunken Diamond.
- The Waves opened with a decisive 6-2 win vs. Michigan State and took a 8-5 victory in game three vs. Fresno State behind a grand slam home run from Matt Forgatch.
- Pepperdine lost game two to Stanford 5-4 and were eliminated by the Cardinal 8-7.
2013 WEST COAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
The West Coast Conference will resume its Baseball Championship this season with a brand new format. Four teams will compete in the 2013 WCC Championships at Banner Island Ballpark May 23-25 in Stockton. It is the first neutral site for the conference championship and will be hosted by the Stockton Ports in cooperation with the Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau. Banner Island Ballpark will host the top four teams from the WCC in the Championship, with a practice day taking place on May 22, and competition from the 23-25.
UP NEXT FOR PEPPERDINE
- Pepperdine returns home to take on Seton Hall in a three-game weekend series March 8-10.
- The Waves are also set to play an exhibition game Thursday against a touring Japanese team Thursday, March 7 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
