Three Waves Named to WCC Preseason All-Conference Team

MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore center fielder Brian Humphries¸ redshirt sophomore right-handed hurler Cole Cook and junior southpaw Matt Bywater Monday were named to the West Coast Conference's Preseason All-Conference Team.

The team is comprised of 11 position players and five pitchers, who were voted on by the WCC's eight head coaches. The Waves' three selections were second only to San Diego's five.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players nor their own team in the preseason poll, which was topped by San Diego with 48 points.

The Toreros received six first-place votes with the other two split between defending conference champion Gonzaga and eighth-place finisher Santa Clara. Pepperdine, which is coming off a 31-23 campaign (12-9 WCC) in 2009, ranked second with 38 points.

Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Thousand Oaks) is a three-time conference honoree, having previously been named to the All-WCC freshman team in 2008 and the first team in 2009. He registered a near-perfect 6-1 record last season through ten starts, striking out 66 and limiting opposing hitters to a .217 batting average.

Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) led all Pepperdine pitchers with 42 punch outs through seven conference starts and walked just 14 batters in 49.2 innings of work. His most impressive performance was a combined three-hit shutout of Loyola Marymount with Nick Gaudi, in which he whiffed seven batters through eight frames.

Cook was recognized three times by the WCC during his rookie season, including a spot on the all-freshman team. He also received WCC Pitcher of the Month honors following a 4-1 March and was voted Player of the Week in recognition of his effort against the Lions

Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) too was a member of the WCC's all-freshman squad in 2009. He batted .305 a year ago with 38 RBI and stole eight bases as the Waves' everyday center fielder.

Humphries raised his batting average .040 points over the final three weeks of the season and will enter 2010 on an eight-game hitting streak, which has included six multi-hit games and four consecutive three-hit contests.

Pepperdine opens its 2010 season at Blair Field for a 6:30 p.m. game with Long Beach State on Friday, Feb. 19.

The Waves' annual alumni game and John Scolinos Award Dinner will take place Saturday, Feb. 19, starting at 2 p.m.
