Rodriguez Named to 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Staff
Jan. 14, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine baseball head coach Steve Rodriguez will serve as an assistant coach for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. Rodriguez is part of a veteran staff announced by USA Baseball general manager Eric Campbell this week.
Also serving alongside Rodriguez are Rob Childress, head coach at Texas A&M, and New Mexico head coach Ray Birmingham. Dave Van Horn, head coach at Arkansas, was announced as the Collegiate National Team manager last April.
“This is an amazing opportunity to work with a great organization,” said Rodriguez, who is beginning his 11th season at the helm for Pepperdine. “I played for Team USA for two years and I am very excited to be putting the red, white and blue back on as a coach. There is nothing more exciting than putting on a uniform that has Team USA on the front. I will have the chance to work with some great coaches, who are great people, and coach some of the best athletes in the country. The schedule is going to be exciting, and I am looking forward to the experience this summer.”
The staff will face international friendship series with Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba (in Havana), as well as complete a domestic exhibition tour and compete in the Honkbal Baseball Week tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands, where Team USA is the defending bronze medalist.
USA Baseball will invite players on a rolling basis during the 2014 college baseball season.
Rodriguez, a veteran as both a player and coach with USA Baseball, served as the manager of the USA Baseball National Team Development Program 17U squad this past summer and played for Team USA in 1991 and 1992. Rodriguez was named “Player of the Series” in both the 1991 Pan American Games and against Korea in 1992.
