MALIBU, Calif. - The second game of Pepperdine's Blue and Orange World Series on Saturday was a back-and-forth affair that ended in a 5-5 tie after the host Orange team plated a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Orange had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but had to come from behind at the end to notch the tie and keep Blue from squaring the series at a game apiece.

Timely hits were the story of the game, as the Orange team made the most of its opportunities, stranding only a pair of baserunners, while pushing five runs across on 10 hits. Starter Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) kept the team close through five plus, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out a game-high four. Freshman Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) moved over to the hill from third base in the fifth and got the Orange out of trouble in the sixth, keeping the score tied at four by escaping a bases loaded jam. He also contributed with the bat, finishing the day with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The offensive leader for the Orange squad, though, was junior shortstop Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory), who got the team going with a two-run single in the first and finished the day 2-3 with a pair of base hits. Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS/Sacramento City College) continued his hot hitting, chipping in with a pair of singles, scoring both times.

The story for the Blue team was missed opportunities, as it stranded five baserunners over the last two innings before giving up the tying run in the bottom half of the seventh.

Blue starter Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) struggled with his command a bit over the first two frames, surrendering two leadoff walks which led to three runs. However, he settled in not allowing another walk and keeping his team in it. Maurer finished with five innings pitched, scattering five hits and adding a strikeout. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) finished up for the Blue team, going the last two innings, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Blue team featured a balanced offensive attack with nine of its ten hitters recording at least one base hit. Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./Servite HS/UCLA) was the only Blue player to log a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with a run scored, and James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) knocked in a pair of runs with a single. Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) had the only extra-base hit of the game, a double to lead off the sixth.

The teams square off for the third and final game of the World Series Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. at Eddie D. Field Stadium.
