Waves Drop Heartbreaker to Stanford 5-4 in NCAA Regional Play
June 2, 2012
STANFORD, Calif.- Pepperdine baseball jumped out to an early lead but was unable to hold on, falling 5-4 to Stanford in the fourth game of the Palo Alto Regional on Saturday evening at Sunken Diamond.
Waves (35-22) starter Scott Frazier(Upland, Calif./Upland HS) came out firing, facing the minimum through two and giving up only a solo home run through five, but a three-run sixth and another run in the eighth hung the loss on him. He went 7.2 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk while striking out five.
Home team by virtue of winning a coin flip, the Waves struck first, plating four runs in the bottom of the third and getting into the Cardinal (40-16) bullpen. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) started off the inning by taking first base after being hit by the pitch. Third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) reached on a fielder's choice bunt, error from the pitcher Mooneyham on an errant throw to second base. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) followed with a 1-0 single to left field to load the bases. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) sent the first pitch he saw into centerfield to score Vincej and give the Waves the 1-0 lead. Right fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) drove in the second run on a fielder's choice RBI ground out to put the Waves up by two.
Designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison University) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and chase Cardinal starter Brett Mooneyham, who gave way to right hander Dean McArdle. Waves' left fielder Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) took a strike from McArdle and then drilled the next pitch off the left field for a two-run double, giving the Waves a 4-0 lead, but that would be all they would get in the inning.
The Cardinal got on the board in the top of the fourth off a solo shot from first baseman Brian Ragira to dead center. The next batter Austin Wilson got aboard off an error, and the Cardinal was able to move him around to third base. With two outs, though, Frazier locked in and struck out designated hitter Tyler Gaffney to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Cardinal tied the game up, 4-4. After stringing together a couple of hits and loading the bases with one out, a curveball in the dirt got away from catcher Miles Silverstein(Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) to bring in the second Cardinal run. Silverstein attempted to hold up a throw, but the ball got away from him and hit the Stanford baserunner who had just scored and went into the dugout. By rule, each runner advanced two bases, tying the game at four.
The Waves threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting Langlois, the potential go-ahead run, on third with one out, when the Cardinal lifted McArdle in favor of righty AJ Vanegas. Waves center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./BonitaHS) chopped a ground ball to second base, and Langlois, who was running on contact, was cut down at the plate.
The Waves again had the leadoff hitter reach base in the bottom of seventh, as Davidson drew a walk. However, Vanegas struck out the next two, and after walking Cooper, got a ground ball to end the inning.
The Cardinal took the lead in the top of the eighth, after a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt moved Alex Blandino over to second. Blandino was cut down after a fielder's choice from Tyler Gaffney. Cardinal shortstop Kenny Diekroeger came through with a RBI double down the left field line to put the Waves down 5-4 and end Frazier's day. Righty reliever Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) entered and got the final out of the inning, but the Waves trailed 5-4 heading to the home half of the eighth.
For the third straight inning, the Waves had the leadoff hitter on as Langlois singled up the middle for his third hit of the day. Catcher Miles Silverstein(Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) delivered the sacrifice bunt to move Langlois to second. With two ou
After Karch took care of the Cardinal in the top of the ninth, the Waves had their last chance in the bottom of the frame, but Vanegas struck out the side to end the game.
The Waves return to action Sunday, June 3 at 1 p.m. in an elimination game against Fresno State. As with all the games in the regional, it will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
