MALIBU, Calif.Jon Moscot pitched the Waves first complete game shutout of the season Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium, blanking the first-place Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-0 on five hits and five strikeouts.

Moscot’s (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) 9.0-inning effort was Pepperdine’s first since the 2010 season finale when Robert Dickmann went the distance in a 1-0 win vs. San Francisco.

Saturday’s win also snapped a five-game losing streak for the Waves who improved to 21-29 and 6-11 (WCC), while the Bulldogs (30-17-1, 13-4 WCC) fell a half game behind first-place San Francisco (14-4) in the West Coast Conference standings.

Moscot (2-1) finished the contest with 125 pitches but got stronger as the game progressed. Because after allowing five base runners through the first four frames, he limited the Bulldogs to just two more singles and hit a batter over the final five.

“I eliminated my curveball in the bullpen before the game and just came after them with a mix of fastballs, changeups and sliders,” Moscot said, “and I just felt that every time I threw a pitch I knew exactly where it was going. I felt good and it helps when you can get ahead of hitters like theirs all day; it seemed like they were feeling more and more defeated as the game wore on.”

The last Gonzaga hitter to reach base was Clayton Eslick with a seventh-inning leadoff single, but he was later retired on a 4-6-3 double play – the second twin-killing induced by Moscot. The sophomore would pick up four more ground outs to finish the game with a dozen.

Third baseman Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) was the busiest of all the Waves infielders as he was credited with one putout and five assists. He also initiated a 5-3 double play in the first inning with one out and runners and first and second.

“Jon has been pretty consistent for us all year and he’s a great competitor,” head coach Steve Rodriguez said. “His ability today to keep batters off balance was phenomenal and he deserves a lot of credit. A complete game shutout is a rarity in college baseball and when you get chance to do that, it makes for very special day.”

Pepperdine’s offense amount to six hits, and none was bigger than Brian Humphries’ (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) two-run single in the third. Down to their last out vs. Gonzaga starter Tyler Olson (6-4), Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and Sam Meyer (Los Gatos, Calif./St. Francis HS) were able to draw consecutive bases on balls which loaded the sacks for Humphries.

The junior left fielder battled with Olson through seven pitches before finally slapping a shot through the hole on the right side. Scoring on the hit were Diedrich and Tyler Brubaker (Valencia, Calif./Saugus HS) who led off the third with his first of two hits.

“Gonzaga kept throwing me curveballs all day and I was able to just sit back and drive one through the infield somehow,” Humphries said. “It was a big win since we’ve been struggling vs. the WCC most of the season, and for us to come out here and shut them out on a Saturday and possibly win the series tomorrow is great for us.”

Pepperdine tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning as Diedrich brought home Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) on a double down the left-field line. Diedrich finished the game with two hits.

Gonzaga’s Mark Phillips followed Olson to the hill in the sixth and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

The series rubber game between Pepperdine and Gonzaga is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
