Waves Fall 4-3 in Series Finale at Loyola Marymount
May 20, 2012
In the hunt for the conference title, the loss puts both the Waves at 14-7 in conference play--tied with San Diego. The two teams will match up next weekend at Eddy D. Field Stadium, with the series winner taking the conference title.
At the plate, the Waves (32-20, 14-7 WCC) tallied 10 hits, with first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) going 4-for-5 with one RBI while right fielder Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Waves starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) had a solid outing, going seven plus, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and did not factor into the decision.
The Waves took a lead in the top of the fourth as Meyer started off the inning with a stand up double to right center field. Designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison Univ.) laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance Meyer to third. Catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) singled to shallow left center to drive in the first run of the day for the Waves, 1-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Waves added two more runs to their lead. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) executed the sacrifice bunt to move Vincej to third. After Joe Sever was intentionally walked for the second time today, Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) sent the 2-2 pitch into left field to drive in Vincej. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) loaded the bases on an error by the shortstop and Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) delivered the sacrifice fly to center field to score the second run of the inning for the Waves and give them a 3-0 lead. The Lions plated one run in the bottom of the seventh and another in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one, 3-2.
In the top of the ninth Meyer started off the inning with a single up the middle, but the Waves were unable to take advantage of the base runner and the 3-2 lead held into the bottom of the ninth. The Waves stranded 14 base runners in the game, which would come back to haunt them.
Reliever Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), who entered in the bottom of the eighth to record the final out and get out of a jam, returned to the mound in the bottom of the ninth. He got into some trouble and with the bases loaded and a two RBI single from the Lions' Nick Devian gave them the 4-3 win.
The Waves will be back in action on Friday at Eddy D. Field Stadium to close out the regular season with a de facto WCC championship series against San Diego. The winner of the series will take the conference's automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. Game one of the series is set for Friday, May 25 at 3 p.m. PT.
