MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Gonzaga Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead through the first three innings, benefitting from six free passes, before the Waves came back with two in the fifth.

The win raised Gonzaga's season record to 30-16-1 and mark against the West Coast Conference to 13-3. Pepperdine fell to 20-29 overall and 5-11 vs. the WCC.

The Bulldogs put 14 runners on base vs. Pepperdine junior starter Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) during his 7.0 inning start, and if it wasn't for some fine defensive plays made behind him, Gonzaga certainly could have put this game out of reach in its early stages.

But the Bulldogs instead left eight runners on base and hit into a Pepperdine season high five double plays, four of which came with Gates on the mound. On the year, Gates has induced a WCC best 17 double play ground balls.

After Gonzaga plated a run on two walks and a hit in the first, Royce Bolinger lined into the first Bulldog double play as second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) caught a laser off his bat before diving into the bag to double off Billy Moon.

Sever was part of four more routine double plays with shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Gatos, Calif./St. Francis HS) in the third, fifth, sixth and ninth innings.

As a team, Pepperdine has turned 62 double plays with Sever assisting on 53 of them.

Unfortunately for Gates (3-5), he couldn't quite master control of his pitches early on and finished the contest with seven walks on top of six hits allowed - all singles. The Bulldogs made it a 2-0 game in the second as Steven Halcomb produced an RBI ground out with runners at second and third, and in the following inning, a leadoff single followed by two walks and a hit by pitch gave Gonzaga a 3-0 lead.

Gates settled down over the next several innings as he pitched past the sixth inning for the 10th time this year and delivered his ninth quality start. He picked a runner off second in the fourth, faced the minimum three batters in the fifth and seventh, and in the sixth he escaped a two-on, one-out jam with a ground ball to short.

Gates finished his outing with a swinging strikeout of Moon, the Bulldogs' No.3 batter, for his lone punchout of the game.

Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) followed Gates to the mound with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Gonzaga starter Ryan Carpenter (8-1) cruised through the Waves lineup through the first four frames before getting a little wild in the fifth. Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) led off the inning with an infield single, then Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) bunted him over to second and he later raced to third on the first of two wild pitches.

Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) followed with a RBI infield single to first, helped by the fact that the Bulldogs' second baseman didn't cover first base in time for the throw. Vincej made it to first on a walk, and then with Kain, successfully executed a double steal.

The Waves' aggressiveness on the base paths paid off as Kain scored easily from third on a passed ball that trimmed Gonzaga's lead to 3-2.

With his bullpen up and throwing, Carpenter quickly rediscovered his groove and went on to retire the final eight Waves he faced and finished the game with nine strikeouts. Closer Cody Martin entered in the eighth and earned his 11th of the year behind three Ks.

Pepperdine will look to even its series with the Bulldogs Saturday at 1 p.m.
