Waves Complete WCC Series Sweep with 6-4 Win at Portland Sunday

PORTLAND, Ore. – Pepperdine scored early and held off a late rally by Portland to claim a 6-4 West Coast Conference victory Sunday at Joe Etzel Field. The Waves (27-24, 13-11 WCC) complete the series sweep against the Pilots (18-35, 8-16 WCC) in the 2013 regular season finale for Pepperdine.
Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) enjoyed a solid day on the mound and at the plate for Pepperdine in securing the Waves sweep to close out the 2013 season. The lefthander earned his sixth victory of the season, going 6.2 innings allowing four runs off nine hits with three strikeouts. The preseason All-American also went 2-for-5 at the plate.
Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) hit his sixth home run of the season and scored a pair of runs. Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) drove in his team-leading 34th run of the season in his final regular season contest for the Waves.
Pepperdine wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring three times in the top of the first. The Waves loaded the bases as Brown and Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) both singled and Langlois walked. Brown scored on a fielder’s choice, Amezquita crossed home on an infield RBI single from Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS). Pepperdine made it 3-0 when James Grandpre was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Langlois homered to center to lead off the third, staking Pepperdine to a 4-0 advantage. It was the fourth long ball of the series for the Waves.
Cody Nulph (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) smacked a double down the right field line to start the fourth, advanced to third on a bunt single by Brown. Nulph then scored on an Amezquita sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 Waves. Portland countered with a run in the home half of the fifth to make it 5-1 Pepperdine.
Portland mounted a rally in the seventh inning, plating three runs, chasing Brown with two outs in the frame and a runner at second base. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) came on and stopped the bleeding with a strikeout after issuing a walk. Karch finished his day going 1.1 innings allowing no hits and struck out three.
Pepperdine added some insurance in eighth, loading the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Meyer, who tagged an infield single to make it 6-4 Waves.
Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) came on to toss a hitless ninth and struck out one in collecting his WCC-leading 14th save of the campaign and second in two games. The 14 saves rate fourth in the Pepperdine single-season record book. Jay Gerkhe owns the all-time record with 18 in 1999.
NOTES: With the WCC road sweep, Pepperdine secured its 16th winning season overall in its last 20 … The Waves improve to 13-11 in league play good for their 29th winning conference campaign in the last 30 years … It marks the first time Pepperdine has swept the Pilots in Portland since 2007 … Head coach Steve Rodriguez improves to 29-7 all-time against Portland.
