Waves Take Series Against Loyola Marymount After 9-3 Victory on Saturday Afternoon
May 19, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- In a team effort the Pepperdine baseball team put together nine runs on 17 hits to defeat Loyola Marymount 9-3 and earn the series win Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.
Eight of nine Waves (32-19, 14-6 WCC) in the starting lineup had a hit, with six having multi-hit days. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) led the team with a 2-for-4 day, including a three-run home run, his sixth of the season. Center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) also had a strong day at the plate, driving in three runs on 1-for-4 hitting.
Waves' starter Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) did a great job of battling through the early innings with runners on base, finishing with only two runs allowed (one earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings of action.
In the WCC standings, the win puts the Waves at 14-6 to lead the conference. San Diego is a half-game behind at 14-7, and they are idle this week. Loyola Marymount (23-26, 11-9 WCC) has a record of 11-9.
The Waves went down 1-0 in the top of the first, but fought back to tie things up in the top of the third off an RBI double from Sever to score Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS).
The Lions answered with another run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Once again, however, that lead would be short lived, as the Waves countered with a run in the top of the fourth. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. A sacrifice bunt from left fielder Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) pushed Meyer to third. Designated hitter Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison Univ.) was robbed of a home run as he blasted a double off the blue monster in left field to score Meyer and tie the game 2-2.
As Frazier continued to battle on the mound, the Waves opened up the game in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs. Forgatch led off the inning with his second double of the day off the wall in left field. A sacrifice bunt from catcher James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) advanced Forgatch to third and Gelalich came through with the sacrifice fly to score Forgatch and give the Waves a 3-2 lead. The hits would continue for the Waves, as Vincej stroked a double down the left field line and third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) had an infield single to the shortstop to bring up Sever. Sever took the 1-1 pitch for a ride, depositing it just on the other side of the wall in left center for his sixth home run of the year to give the Waves a 6-2 lead.
The Waves tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, as Gelalich came through with a two-out two RBI single down the left field line to put the score at 8-2, Waves.
An RBI single from Meyer added to the Waves run total in the top of the eighth, putting the score at 9-2, Waves.
The Lions plated a run in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS), but the freshman settled down to get a double play to end the inning and keep the score at 9-3.
The win gives the Waves another 1.5 points to give them a total of 14.5 points in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup against crosstown rival Loyola Marymount. The Lions have 6.5 points in the competition that pits the Waves and Lions in head-to-head competition.
The Waves will be back at Page Stadium tomorrow, looking for a series sweep over the Lions. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. PT.
