Waves Ride Early Lead to 6-3 Victory at Rival Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES - The Pepperdine baseball team got off to an early start, plating three runs in the top of the first, in part due to the hitting of redshirt senior Floyd Givento defeat crosstown rival Loyola Marymount 6-3 in game one of the key West Coast Conference series on Friday afternoon.
Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) led the Waves (31-19, 13-6 WCC) with a 2-for-4 day, including a bases clearing double for score three and a solo home run to deep right field, his second of the season.
Waves' starter Jon Moscot(Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) earned his fifth win of the season, settling down after the first inning to allow the Lions (23-25, 11-8 WCC) only three runs off seven hits in 6.2 innings of work. He also collected three strikeouts on the day.
The Waves wasted no time getting on base, as leadoff hitter Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) singled to right field. After a ground out from Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) advanced Vincej to second, Lions' starter Colin Welmon hit back-to-back batters in Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) and Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) to load the bases. With two outs, Given stepped in and drove the 3-1 pitch off the top of the wall in right field for a bases clearing double, giving the Waves the 3-0 lead.
The Lions answered in the bottom half of the first, plating two runs of their own to put the score at 3-2, Waves.
In the third the Waves struck again, as Sever led off the inning with a single. Cooper walked and Sever advanced to third on a Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) fly out to centerfield. With runners on the corners, designated hitter Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison Univ.) took the 2-2 pitch up the middle for an RBI single to put the Waves ahead 4-2.
The Waves added to their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth inning, Given got a hold of the 1-0 pitch and sent it over the right field wall for his second homer of the year. The solo shot put the Waves up 5-2.
In the sixth the Waves took advantage of another hit by pitch from a Lion pitcher, as center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) came around to score on a two-out single from Cooper.
The Waves' 6-2 lead held through the bottom of the seventh when the Lions plated their third run of the game. Reliever Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) entered in the bottom of the seventh to record the third out get the Waves out of the inning without any further damage.
Karch held the Lions at bay for the rest of the game, shutting them out through the final two innings and allowing only two hits and collecting one strikeout en route to his first save of the season.
The win gives the Waves 1.5 points to give them a total of 13 points in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup against crosstown rival Loyola Marymount. The Lions have 6.5 points in head-to-head competition between the two schools.
The Waves will look to take the series as they are back in action against the Lions at 2 p.m. PT tomorrow at Page Stadium.
