LONG BEACH, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team pulled out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back, defeating Long Beach State 5-3 at Blair Field on Tuesday evening.

The Waves (30-19) were led by second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep), the reigning West Coast Conference Rawlings Player of the Week, with a 3-for-5 day with one RBI. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) and left fielder Floyd Given(Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) also had multi-hit days, each going 2-for-4 on the day.

The Waves' pitching looked sharp, starting with starter Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS), who earned his second win in as many games, going 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) threw a perfect seventh and eighth innings, allowing no hits and striking out four of six batters faced. Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) entered in the bottom of the ninth to preserve his team-leading eighth save of the season.

The Waves started things off in the top of the first with a leadoff double from shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS). Next third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) then got a hold of the first pitch he saw and sent it to shallow left field to score Vincej from second to put the Waves ahead 1-0. Next batter Sever battled through a 1-2 count to double down the right field to score Davidson from first and the Waves took a 2-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt by Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College/Junipero Serra HS) to advance Sever to third, Meyer singled up the middle to plate the Waves third run of the inning.

The Dirtbags (25-24) added two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to come within one, 3-2.

The Waves answered right back with an RBI groundout from catcher James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) to put the Waves up 4-2.

After the Dirtbags pulled within one again in the bottom of the fifth, the Waves again extended their lead in the top of the sixth as Given started off the inning with a single. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) reached on the sacrifice bunt fielder's choice as the first baseman's throw went into the outfield and Given advanced to third. With one out center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) scored Given from third on an RBI fielder's choice ground out as Langlois was out at second.

The Waves took their 5-3 lead into the seventh inning and never looked back, as stellar pitching by Karch in the seventh and eighth kept the Waves on top. Closer Swanner entered in the bottom of the ninth and pitched out of bit of a jam, as the Dirtbags had two runners on and only one out. He was helped by a 2-5 caught stealing to get the lead runner at third as the Dirtbags attempted a double steal and got the final batter to pop out to preserve the win.

The Waves will be back in action on Friday as they travel to crosstown rival Loyola Marymount for a key West Coast Conference series. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. PT.
