Waves Notch Series Sweep with 8-7 Win Over BYU
May 12, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team notched its first conference series sweep of the season, outlasting visiting BYU by a score of 8-7 in a back-and-forth game Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The win pushes Pepperdine's conference record to 12-6, currently putting them atop the WCC standings and setting up a major showdown with the other top contenders San Diego (13-7 WCC) and Loyola Marymount (11-6 WCC), who complete their three-game series tomorrow with the winner joining the Waves in first place.
BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Waves answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame and Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) worked back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and followed it by executing a double steal. Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) pushed Vincej across with an RBI groundout, and Davidson scored on a passed ball to put the waves ahead 2-1 after the first.
Starter Corey Miller(Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and a pair of walks, tallying seven strikeouts but did not factor into the decision.
The visiting Cougars plated three runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to build a 5-2 lead.
Freshman righty Mat Snider(Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) was first out of the pen in the fourth and held BYU scoreless in the fifth before the offense could get to work in the bottom half of the frame.
Center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) sliced a leadoff double down the left field line to start the inning and moved over to third on a drag bunt single by Vincej. Davidson drove Gelalich in with an RBI single, and later in the inning, Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) drove Vincej in with a groundout to pull the Waves to within one, 5-4.
BYU answered with a run in the top half of the sixth, but Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./ North Medford HS) minimized the damage and keep the score at 6-4 Cougars. Maurer picked up the win with 1.2 innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out a pair.
The freshman bottom third of the order came up big to key the Waves' answer in the bottom half, as Brian Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) led off with a single, and James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian) and Gelalich followed with walks to load the bases. Vincej drove in Langlois with a single, and Sever tied the game with a sac fly. With the score knotted at six, Tony Coopercame through with a huge two-out, two-RBI single to put the Waves ahead 8-6.
BYU pulled to within one with a run in the top of the seventh, but that is as close as the Cougars would get, as Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) and Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, with Swanner picking up his seventh save of the season.
The Waves head south for a 6:30 p.m. PT Tuesday game against Long Beach State before heading to conference and crosstown rival Loyola Marymount.
