Pepperdine scored both of its runs in the fifth inning after the Gaels struck for a pair in the top of the frame. Hacker reached on a single and later scored on a wild pitch. James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) walked and scored on an RBI single from Hacker to knot the contest at 2-2.
It remained deadlocked until the 10th as both pitching staffs escaped jams. Pepperdine squandered big opportunities in the eighth and ninth. The Waves had runners at first and second with two away in the eighth and had a runner at third base on a one-out double by Grandpre, who advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pepperdine eventually loaded the bases, but could not get the go ahead run across the plate.
Saint Mary’s broke through in the top of the 10th against Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS). The Gaels had first and third with one out when Swanner (1-1) was charged with a balk, allowing the winning run to score. It was the first run allowed by Pepperdine’s closer since March 3 at No. 10 Oklahoma.
Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) turned in another quality start for the Waves, allowing two runs off six hits and struck out five with two walks in 7.0 innings. Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) was also tough out of the bullpen for the Waves allowing one hit in 2.0 innings with a strikeout.
Patrick Keane (2-5) earned the win in relief with 5.0 strong innings, allowing no runs off three hits and struck out four. Brenden Kalfus extended his WCC-record hitting streak to 32 games with a 2-for-4 day.
Pepperdine closes the home portion of the 2013 regular season Sunday in the series finale against Saint Mary’s. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in a game featuring a live video broadcast via WaveCasts. The Waves will honor their seniors in a special pregame ceremony.
