MALBU, Calif. – Pepperdine opened an important West Coast Conference series with a 5-3 victory against Saint Mary’s Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (24-21, 10-9 WCC) capitalized on a pair of mistakes by the Gaels (19-30, 9-10 WCC) en route to a four-run fifth inning.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) turned in a 3-for-4 day at the plate and was the only Wave with a multi-hit gam,e. Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and Cody Nulph (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) collected a hit apiece for the Waves.

Saint Mary’s scored single runs in the first and second before Pepperdine got on the board in the third. Nulph was hit by a pitch, Moyer singled for runners at the corners with one out. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) tagged a sacrifice fly to center to bring the Waves to within one at 2-1.

After the Gaels scored an unearned run on a fielding error in the fifth for a 3-1 lead, Pepperdine capitalized on a pair of costly errors by Saint Mary’s in the home half. The Waves scored three runs on two fielding errors and added another on a sacrifice fly to right by Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS). Pepperdine managed just one hit in the four-run frame – a single by Moyer.

Righthander Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) collected the victory for the Waves going 6.0 innings, allowing three unearned runs off one hit with eight strikeouts and six walks. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) allowed one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Michael Swanner locked down his WCC-leading 12th save of the season with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Ben Griset (4-3) took the loss for Saint Mary’s, allowing five runs (two earned) off three hits and struck out three in 5.0 innings. Gary Cornish was effective in relief, allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.

Brenden Kalfus extended his WCC record hitting streak to 31 games with a double ripped to right center field in his final at-bat in the eighth inning for the Gaels. It was the only extra base hit of the contest for either team.

Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s entered the game tied for fifth in the league standings at 9-9. The top four teams in the conference advance to the WCC Championship May 23-25 at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.

Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s will square off in game two of the WCC series Saturday. First pitch against the Gaels is set for 1:00 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a contest featuring a live video broadcast via WaveCasts. Saturday is Military Appreciation Day and all servicemen/servicewomen and their families will receive free admission to the contest.
