Waves Defeat BYU 4-3 in Walk-Off Fashion
May 10, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- It took extra innings, but the Pepperdine baseball team defeated BYU in walk-off fashion 4-3 as Joe Severwas hit by the pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to push across the game-winning run on Thursday afternoon in game one of the West Coast Conference series.
After being down 1-0 in the second inning, the Waves (27-19, 10-6 WCC) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth and added one more in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. The team held that lead through the seventh inning, but the Cougars (19-22, 7-9 WCC) tied the game up 3-3 in the top of the eighth, pushing things into extra innings and setting up the eventual game-winning run in the 11th inning.
All nine of the Waves' batting order had at least one hit on the day with three having multi-hit days. Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep), the recipient of the hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning from BYU's Mason Marshall, was 1-for-4 on the day with the game-winning RBI. Shortstop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) led the Waves with a 3-for-5 day from the plate.
Waves' starter Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) went 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Reliever Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) threw a solid 2.2 innings, allowing only two hits and no runs en route to his third win of the season.
After being down 1-0 in the top of the second, the Waves took the lead 2-1 in the fourth. With the bases loaded, left fielder Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) singled the first pitch he saw into left field to score two.
The Waves added one more run in the fifth inning as Vincej had a one-out single and third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) doubled over the left fielder's head to score the speedy Vincej from first and give the Waves the 3-1 lead.
The Cougars fought back, however, with singular runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie things up, 3-3.
The Waves had base runners in the bottom of the ninth and 10th, but were unable to plate a run.
In the top of the 11th the Cougars threatened with back-to-back singles with one-out, but Karch was able to get a pop out and a strikeout to end the inning and keep the score deadlocked, 3-3.
In the bottom of the 11th, catcher James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) started off the rally with a one-out single, his second hit of the day. Center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) followed with a single into shallow left-center field. Ranny Lowe(Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) entered as a pinch runner for Grandpre. Lowe and Gelalich advanced 90 feet in the next at-bat on a wild pitch from Marshall. After intentionally walking Vincej, Davidson reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to the second baseman as the Cougars were able to cut down the lead runner Lowe at the plate. With the bases loaded and two out, the Waves' best hitter in Sever came to the plate. After working the count full, Sever was hit by the 3-2 offering from Marshall, walking in Gelalich from third for the game-winning run.
The Waves and Cougars will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. PT.
