LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 17 Pepperdine baseball team gave up two unearned runs and Colin Welmon tossed a complete game for Loyola Marymount as the Waves fell 3-2 on the road on Friday night.

Welmon went the distance, giving up the two earned runs and allowing six hits for the home team Lions to pick up his eighth win of the season.

A missed opportunity on a double play ball in the fourth and then an error in the fifth led to all three runs for LMU as the Waves’ starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) tossed all eight innings, giving up just one earned run. Miller allowed seven hits and struck out five in the game, falling to 7-3 with the loss.

Pepperdine struck first, getting a sacrifice fly from Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) in the top of the third inning after Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) led off with a double. The Waves wouldn’t score again until the ninth as Welmon was efficient all night.

The Lions loaded the bases in the fourth inning and when the Waves couldn’t turn a double play on a grounder, LMU scored its first run to even things up. A two-out error on a fly ball to the outfield in the fifth inning allowed the two go-ahead runs to score and that would be enough for LMU.

Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) made two highlight reel catches in the sixth and seventh innings, crashing into the wall on a dead sprint on one, to help keep the Waves close down the stretch. Brown then hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to pull Pepperdine within one, but it was the second out of the inning and the Waves couldn’t follow with any heroics.

Jimmy Jack recorded the only RBI in the game for LMU. Tanner Donnels and David Fletcher had two hit days and each scored a run for the Lions.

Caruso scored a run and was 1-for-3 for the Waves, and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The loss drops Pepperdine to 31-11, 14-5 WCC and improves LMU to 27-19, 14-8. It is the first time since March 16 that the Waves have dropped back-to-back games after their loss at Long Beach State earlier in the week.

The Waves still hold a 1.5 game lead in the WCC standings with two games left in the series with LMU. The teams will face off again tomorrow night at 6 p.m. with a live audio broadcast available on WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
