Waves Fall in 10-Inning Battle at Cal Poly, 2-1
May 1, 2012
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team fell 2-1 in 10 innings to Cal Poly in walk off fashion at Baggett Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The story of the day was missed opportunities for the Waves (24-17) as they stranded 13 runners total, with seven of those in scoring position.
The lone run for the Waves came in the top of the third inning as shortstop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) came home from third on a balk by Mustangs' (27-17) starter Bryan Granger.
Overall the Waves outhit the Mustangs 10 to seven and were led by left fielder Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) who went 3-for-5 on the day, including a double that hit the top of the wall, barely missing a home run in right field. Second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) was 2-for-4 with a walk to continue his hot hitting.
Starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits and tallying three strikeouts. He gave way to lefty Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./Medford North HS) who threw three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and collecting one strikeout.
The walk off home run for the Mustangs came with two outs in the bottom of the tenth as Jimmy Allen got a hold of reliever Eric Karch's(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) first offering of the at bat for his third home run of the season.
The Waves got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Vincej started off the inning with a single to the right side. Third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was hit by the 2-1 offering from Mustang starter Granger. With one out, a fielder's choice by right fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./La Canada College), Vincej advanced to third. With two outs and runners on the corners, Granger balked to walk in Vincej from third and the Waves took a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth the Mustangs plated the equalizer, as the leadoff hitter Tim Wise put down a bunt for a single. He stole second, moved to third on a fly ball and a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Allen tied the score at 1-1.
Maurer pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth as he walked two with two outs, but was able to get the catcher Chris Hoo to pop out to Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) at first for the third out of the inning and keep the score tied at 1-1.
The Waves had an excellent opportunity in the top of the seventh as Sever led things off with an infield single and with one out stole second to move into scoring position. Meyer singled to right field and Sever came around to attempt to score from second, but a strong throw from Mustang right fielder Nick Torres gunned him down at home and Meyer over slid the bag at second and was tagged out for the third out of the inning.
After Maurer downed the Mustangs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Given led off in the top of the eighth with a double off the top of the wall in right field for a standup double. The Mustangs thwarted the Waves rally as they got Given at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison University), Silverstein struckout and caught Sever stealing to end the inning.
Karch entered in the bottom of the eighth and got three-straight pop ups to retire the Mustangs and head to the top of the ninth.
The Waves strand one runner in the top of the ninth and in the bottom of the ninth Karch encountered some trouble, as the bases were loaded with two outs and the top of the lineup at the plate for the Mustangs. Karch got Mike Miller to strikeout looking to get out of the jam and take the tied game to the tenth inning.
In the top of the tenth the Waves had runners on the corners with one out as they orchestrated a textbook hit-and-run, with pinch hitter Drew Hacker(Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) going from first to third on a single by Given. As was the story of the day, however, the Waves were unable to push across the go-ahead run as the Mustangs retired the next two Waves hitters.
Karch took the hill again for the Waves in the bottom of the tenth and got the first two outs easily, with a lineout to left field and a pop up to the shortstop. However, the next batter, Allen got a hold of the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the left field fence to get the 2-1 walk off victory.
The Waves will be back in action as they host San Francisco in a three-game West Coast Conference set starting on Friday at 3 p.m. PT.
