MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine got plenty of offense and capitalized on mistakes in a 9-4 comeback victory against USC Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Playing in their first game in nine days after a break for final exams, the Waves (22-17) used a six-run seventh inning to complete the season series sweep against the Trojans (16-27).

Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) went 2-for-5 and clubbed his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the second inning with two outs. It was the second straight game Amezquita has homered for Pepperdine and it marked the 10th career blast for the outfielder. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) each collected a pair of hits. Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) drove in a pair of runs.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the home half of the seventh, Pepperdine scored six runs with two outs as USC struggled on the mound and defensively. After two Waves reached base on a walk and a fielding error, Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) singled to load the bases. The Waves scored a run on a wild pitch, followed by a two-run single by Lowe to make the score 6-4.

Pepperdine wasn’t done and loaded the bases again on a walk and a hit-batsman and the Trojans’ second fielding error of the inning plated another run for a 7-4 lead. Davidson earned a bases loaded walk and a passed ball gave the Waves a 9-4 lead.

USC got one back in the ninth when Kevin Swick hit the fourth Trojan home run of the game to cut the deficit to 9-5. Greg Zebrack hit two homers, while Adam Landecker also added a long ball for USC.

Pepperdine took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI groundouts by Meyer and Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS). Amezquita’s solo shot in the second made it 3-1 Pepperdine. The Trojans tied it at 3-3 in the top of the third on a two run homer by Landecker.

Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) collected the win in relief of lefthander Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS). McClelland (2-1) went 2.0 innings, allowing one run off one hit and struck out three. Brown logged 5.0 innings and allowed three runs off six hits with five strikeouts. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) finished the game, going 2.0 innings, allowing one run off one hit and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Nigel Nootbaar (1-4) suffered the loss for USC, allowing five unearned runs in 1.2 innings.
