Big Seventh Inning Propels the Waves to 9-6 Victory at Santa Clara
April 22, 2012
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - For the second-straight day the Pepperdine baseball team orchestrated a come-from-behind victory as the overcame a 4-2 deficit with the help of a seven-run seventh inning to defeat Santa Clara 9-6 on Sunday afternoon at Schott Stadium.
The Waves (24-16, 7-5 WCC) had their biggest inning of the year in the top of the seventh, which they entered trailing the Broncos (19-18, 2-10 WCC) 4-2 and plated seven runs to take a 9-4 lead that they did not relinquish. The inning was highlighted by a three RBI triple from third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and a two-run home run from shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS), his second of the season. Davidson finished the day 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs. Vincej was 2-for-6 with two RBIs.
The win went to Waves' starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS), who went 6.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with one strikeout. He is now 6-3 on the season. Closer Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) earned his team-leading sixth save of the season as he threw 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Waves found themselves in an early 3-0 hole as the Broncos plated two runs in the first and one in the second.
In the third the Waves got on the board, as right fielder Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) started off the inning with a single up the middle. With one out first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) doubled to left center to score Cooper and cut the deficit to 3-1. Designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison HS) sent the 1-1 pitch down the right field line to score Meyer and put the score at 3-2 Broncos.
The Broncos answered in the bottom half of the inning as Drew Ozanne hit a one-run home run to put the score at 4-2 Santa Clara.
The Waves really opened up the game in the top of the seventh as they put seven runs on the board. An RBI single from Meyer started off the scoring and pulled the Waves within one, 4-3. The Waves loaded the bases to bring up Davidson who tripled the first pitch he saw off reliever Brock Simon to score three. Davidson himself came in to score on a passed ball to put the Waves up 7-4. The inning was far from over, however, as left fielder Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) walked and Vincej blasted his second home run of the season, scoring two runs and giving the Waves the 9-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh the Broncos found the board again as they were able to tack two more on, to put the score at 9-6 Waves, but that was as close as they would get as Swanner came in with one out in the bottom of the eighth to close out the game.
The Waves will now have eight days off for finals and graduation. They will take to the diamond next on Tuesday, May 1 as they travel to Cal Poly for a 6 p.m. PT tilt.
