MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine got offensive production throughout the lineup and All-American Aaron Brown did the rest, tossing a complete game gem against Gonzaga in a 10-4 West Coast Conference victory Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (21-17, 9-6 WCC) bounced back from consecutive losses to the Bulldogs (26-11, 13-5 WCC) to collect a win in a tightening league race.

Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) turned in his first career complete game allowing four runs (two earned) off six hits and struck out five with only one walk to collect a win in his fifth straight start. Brown (5-1) threw 117 pitches, 79 for strikes and retired Gonzaga in order in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

Pepperdine collected 11 hits. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) and Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) each went 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the Waves offensively. Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) launched his sixth home run of the season – a three-run blast to dead center in the fourth inning – on a 2-for-3 day. Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) drove in a career-high four on a 2-for-3 day.

Gonzaga took a 2-0 lead early, plating single runs in the first and second, highlighted by its second successful suicide squeeze play of the series in the second.

Pepperdine rallied for two runs in the home half of the second to tie the contest at 2-2. Meyer singled and Devin Carter (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) reached on a fielder’s choice. Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) singled to short and Hacker followed with an RBI single to knot the score.

Trailing 3-2 heading to the home half of the third after a run scored on an error, Pepperdine took the lead for good with the first of consecutive three-run innings. Langlois and Meyer singled to start the third followed by an Amezquita walk to load the bases with two outs. Carter singled up the middle to drive in the tying run and Lowe provided the go-ahead run on a squibber down the third base line. Hacker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 5-3 lead.

The Waves were not done in the fourth. After a Langlois single, Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Amezquita’s blast to center for an 8-3 lead.

Gonzaga scored a run on a double play in the seventh frame and Pepperdine answered with a pair after the stretch. Yamaguchi and Lowe walked and Hacker hit a two-run single to right for a six-run cushion.

Zach Abbruzzaa (0-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs and went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs off six hits and struck out a pair of Waves. Jimmy Sinatro was the only Zag with a multi-hit day, finishing 2-for-2 off the bench.

Pepperdine takes a long break for final exams and hosts local rival USC Tuesday, April 30. First pitch against the Trojans is set for 3:00 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a game featuring a live video feed via WaveCasts.
