April 21, 2012
SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth to hold onto a 6-5 victory in game two of the West Coast Conference series at Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.
A home run from second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep), who went 3-for-4 on the day, along with catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) who had a 2-for-3 day with one RBI, the Waves were able to orchestrate the come from behind victory. The game-winning run was plated in the top of the eighth by designated hitter Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison College) off a balk by Santa Clara (19-17, 2-9 WCC) pitcher Chris Mendoza.
Waves' (23-16, 6-5 WCC) starter Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) earned his fifth win of the season, going 7.0 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits along with five strikeouts. Sophomore reliever Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) entered in bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second and was able to hold off the Broncos through two innings earn his team-leading fifth save of the year.
Down 1-0, the Waves got on the board in the top of the third as Silverstein started the inning with a double down the left field line. A single from Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) moved Silverstein over to third and he would eventually score on an error by the Broncos' pitcher.
The Broncos took a 3-1 lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth.
In the sixth the Waves got back on the board as Sever took the first pitch he saw over the center field wall for his team-leading fifth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the seventh the Waves tied things up as they took advantage of the Broncos' pitching change. Max Derring came out of the bullpen and delivered a leadoff walk to Forgatch. Silverstein reached on his sacrifice bunt attempt on an error by Deering and Forgatch advanced to third on the throw. With one out, shortstop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game up 3-3.
The Waves did the real damage in the top of the eighth, as Sever led off the inning with a single to right field. A Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) sacrifice bunt moved Sever into scoring position. First baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Sever and gave the Waves their first lead of the day, 4-3. The Waves continued to string together the timely hits, as Forgatch and Silverstein had back-to-back singles and the Waves took a 5-3 lead. After a pitching change by the Broncos, the Waves took advantage of reliever Mendoza's wild pitch to get into scoring position and the eventual game-winning run, scored by Forgatch came off a Mendoza balk.
The Waves took the 6-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Starter Frazier got into some trouble with a leadoff single and a second runner got on by an error by the third baseman. Swanner came in from the bullpen in relief, and two runs scored, one on a single and one on an error by the centerfielder. The Waves threw out the game-tying run at home as Andrew Biancardi hit a ground ball to Davidson at third base who chose to go home to get the lead runner.
Swanner threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth to solidify his fifth save of the year.
