SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Pepperdine baseball fell 6-2 at Santa Clara to drop game one of the West Coast Conference three-game set on Friday evening.

Waves (22-16, 5-5 WCC) starter Jon Moscot(Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) went all eight but took the loss as he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts.

The Waves tallied eight hits, nearly matching the Broncos' (19-16, 2-8 WCC) hit total of nine but were unable to string them together. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison University) each drove in a run, going 1-for-4 on the night. Center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) led the team with a 2-for-2 night and two walks, but the Waves stranded eight runners on the evening.

The Broncos took an early 1-0 run in the bottom of the second and added two more to build the lead to 3-0 after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Waves got on the board as left fielder Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) earned a leadoff walk. With one out, catcher Miles Silverstein(Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) singled to right field to put two on for the Waves. The bases were then loaded after a Gelalich walk to bring up the top of the order. Vincej came through with a sacrifice fly to drive in Given from third, but the Waves stranded the other two base runners.

The Waves headed into the bottom of the fifth trailing 3-1 and that score would hold through the bottom of the seventh when the Broncos collected three more insurance runs to put the score at 6-1.

In the top of the ninth the Waves rallied, as right fielder Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) started things off with a 2-1 single to center. With one out, Given singled up the middle and an RBI double from Forgatch drove in Cooper. With two outs, the Waves had the bases loaded, but were unable to push across any more runs.

The Waves and Broncos will be back in action at 1 p.m. PT at Schott Stadium as they try to even the series.
