Pepperdine Drops WCC Series Opener to Gonzaga 6-3
April 19, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine created plenty of opportunities to score runs, but could not capitalize in a 6-3 loss to Gonzaga in West Coast Conference action Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (20-16, 8-5 WCC) stranded 13 base runners in a game they outhit the league-leading Bulldogs (25-10-1, 12-4 WCC) 11-6.
Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) led the way for the Waves offensively with a 3-for-4 day and scored a pair of runs, while Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) went 2-for-5 with the game’s only extra-base hit – a double in the ninth inning. All told, eight starters in the lineup collected at least one base hit and all nine reached base at least once.
Pepperdine trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second before scratching out a run against Gonzaga All-American Marco Gonzalez. Brown singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on an RBI single from Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) to make it 2-1.
Righthander Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) really settled in after laboring in the first two frames and retired eight in a row at one point, setting the side down in order in the fourth and fifth.
Things unraveled for Pepperdine and Frazier in the sixth as Gonzaga batted around, scoring four runs off three hits. The Bulldogs scored twice on bases loaded walks and RBI singles from Cabe Reiten and Caleb Wood.
Pepperdine pushed a run across in the home half of the sixth. Brown singled, advanced to third on a single from Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and scored on an error to make it 6-2 Gonzaga. The Waves loaded the bases in the eighth on back-to-back singles by Amezquita and Brown and a walk to Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS). Pepperdine would score just one run with no outs on a groundout by Hacker.
Gonzaga escaped bases loaded situations in the first and eighth and the Waves stranded a pair of runners in the fifth and sixth.
Frazier (3-5) went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) off three hits and struck out four and walked six. Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Mat Snider (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) threw a scoreless ninth. Gonzalez (5-2) collected the win for Gonzaga, winners of 10 straight, going seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) off eight hits and struck out three Waves.
Pepperdine looks to even the series Saturday in game two. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 1:00 p.m. in a contest featuring live video streaming via WaveCasts.
