MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 19 Pepperdine baseball team was unable to come up with a late run, dropping a 3-2 ballgame to San Francisco at home Friday afternoon.

The Waves got a runner on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to come up with the late hit to push the tying run across. Aaron Brown and Kolten Yamaguchi provided the only offense of the day for Pepperdine, each hitting solo home runs in the game.

Abe Bobb tossed a complete game for the Dons, giving up eight hits, but only two earned runs to move to 3-3 on the year.

USF struck first in the third inning, scoring on a ground ball double play after loading the bases. The Dons would take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Derek Atkinson hit a two-run single.

Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) struck in the bottom half of the fifth, hitting his second homer of the year to right field. Just one inning later, Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) hit a laser shot to right-center, making it a 3-2 game, but that was as close as the Waves would come. For Brown it was his eight home run of the season and his fourth in the last five games.

Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) singled to lead off the eighth and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt. That was as far as Davidson got, though, as Bobb got a fly out and ground out to end the inning. Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) reached safely after a Don error in the ninth and then moved to second on a wild pitch to get into scoring position with one out. Bobb was again able to work his way out of the jam, ending the game with a strikeout and ground out.

Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) got the start for Pepperdine, giving up five hits and three earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Ivan Dilda (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) got the final out of the seventh, stranding a pair of USF runners on second and third with a fly out to center. A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) would toss a hitless final two innings, striking out three batters along the way.

Davidson and Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) each had two hit games for the Waves, going 2-for-4 on the day. Atkinson was 2-for-4 as well for the Dons.

The loss drops Pepperdine to 29-9, 13-4 WCC and moves USF to 18-19, 7-10 WCC. The teams play the rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m. with all the action broadcast live on WaveCasts.
