Waves Comeback Does Not Hold as they Fall 8-6 at No. 12 Cal State Fullerton
April 17, 2012
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team held close with the No. 12 Cal State Fullerton Titans, taking a 6-5 lead on a three-run home run by Joe Severin the top of the eighth, but the Waves were unable to hold off the surging Titans in the bottom half of the inning, falling 8-6 on Tuesday evening.
The Waves (22-15) went toe-to-toe with the Titans, as both teams tallied 11 hits on the day, but the Titans' hits proved to be more timely as the collected two more runs in the victory.
Waves starter Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./Medford North HS) went 6.1 inning, surrendering three runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Sam Meyer (Los Altos,Calif./St. Francis HS) and Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) both had 2-for-4 days from the plate, and current WCC Rawlings Player of the Week Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) kept up his hot hitting, going 1-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.
The Waves got on the board first in the top of the second, as Cooper started off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Titans' shortstop. Next Meyer sent the first pitch he saw up the middle to give the Waves runners on the corners. Left fielder Floyd Given(Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) executed a sacrifice fly to left center to score Cooper from third and give the Waves the 1-0 lead.
That lead held up until the bottom of the fourth, when the Titans strung together some hits and an RBI double by center fielder Michael Lorenzen tied things up, 1-1. The Waves kept fighting and took the lead back in the top of the sixth off a RBI groundout from Sever to score Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS), who doubled to get on base and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Titans starter Koby Gauna.
The potent Titan offense would touch up the Waves in the bottom of the seventh, as they chased starter Maurer with the score still 2-1, but with two runners on and one out. The Waves would bring in two pitchers to finish off the inning, with Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) finally recording the final two outs of the inning on a strikeout and a foul out. That was not before the damage was done, however, as the Titans scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth the Waves answered, as the inning started with catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) reaching base by virtue of a hit by pitch from Titan reliever Dimitri DeLaFunete. The next batter, Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) walked and after a pitching change, a single from Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) loaded the bases. Davidson came through with a sacrifice fly and the Waves cut the lead to 5-3. And then with runners on second and third, Sever came through with his fourth home run of the season as he took a 3-2 pitch deep over the left field wall for a three-run bomb. The Waves took the lead 6-5 and headed into the bottom of the eighth.
The lead would unfortunately not hold up, as the Waves were touched up for three runs in the bottom half of the eighth and headed into their potential final at bats in the top of the ninth down 8-5.
The bottom half of the order delivered, as Silverstein started off the inning with a double and Gelalich legged out a bunt single. The Waves had runners on the corners and no outs, but the Waves were unable to generate anything with the base runners, and the Titans closed out the game.
The Waves are set to return to action on the road this weekend as they travel to Santa Clara for a WCC three-game series. Game one is set for 6 p.m. PT.
