Waves Down Cal State Northridge, 9-5, on the Road
April 15, 2014
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The No. 19 Pepperdine baseball team picked up a 9-5 road win over Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, paying the Matadors back for a loss earlier this season.
The visiting Waves pounded out their nine runs on 13 hits and got a solid start out of Jackson McClelland to grab the non-conference victory.
The Waves busted open the game with a four-run fifth inning, getting a run scoring double from Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) to kick things off. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) followed with a two-run double off the wall and Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) singled him home to make it a 6-0 game.
Brown and Moyer were also the ones who gave the Waves an early 2-0 lead, as Moyer tripled to lead off the game and then scored on a Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) sacrifice fly. Brown went deep in the fourth inning, hitting an opposite field solo-shot. It was Brown's seventh homer of the year and his third in the last three games.
The teams traded runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, before CSUN put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Matadors got an RBI groundout and solo-homer in the inning to make it 7-2.
McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) gave way to A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) prior to the seventh inning. McClelland tossed 6.0 innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs to move to 6-1 on the year with the victory.
"I felt good today," said McClelland. "It was nice to get out there, get some good solid innings in and have our team get the win. We had some pretty big defensive plays behind me to get out of innings and then the guys took that momentum and turned it into offense, which helped a lot. They stole one earlier this year from us, so it was nice to get it back."
Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, once again giving the Waves a comfortable five-run lead, 8-3.
That lead quickly became less than comfortable when the Matadors scored a run and loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning. Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) came in, getting a strikeout on the first batter he faced before Brett Balkan singled in a run to make it an 8-5 game. The next batter hit a sharp grounder back up the middle that glanced off Blanchard's leg and right to Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) who flipped to Moyer and then Moyer fired to first for the inning-ending double play.
After the Waves tacked on a run in the top of the ninth, Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) came in to toss a scoreless bottom half of the inning and close out the 9-5 win.
Moyer finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate, with one RBI and two runs scored. He had one triple and two doubles, running his season double total to an NCAA-leading 19. Brown was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Anderson posted a three-hit day with an RBI.
The win moves the Waves to 28-8 on the year and drops CSUN to 13-23. Pepperdine will host San Francisco for the three-game WCC series later this week.
