SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Pepperdine opened an important West Coast Conference road series with a 7-4 victory Friday night at Fowler Park. The Waves (19-13, 7-3 WCC) generated 10 hits and the pitching staff did the rest against the Toreros (19-14, 5-5 WCC).

Trailing 1-0 after an unearned San Diego run in the first, Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) got the Waves on the board in emphatic fashion in the third. Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) reached on an error with one out in the inning, followed by a single from Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS). This set the stage for Davidson, who connected for his fifth home run of the season with a three-run blast to deep right center for a 3-1 advantage.

Pepperdine tacked on two more in both the fourth and fifth. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) doubled down the left field line with one out, followed by an intentional walk issued to Hacker. Moyer came up big for the Waves and slapped a two-run double to left field, staking Pepperdine to a 5-1 lead.

San Diego answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth, but the Waves continued to add in the fifth. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) earned a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS). Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) drove in the Pepperdine catcher with  a RBI single through the left side for a 7-3 lead.

USD managed an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but would not score again.

Righthander Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) turned in a strong start, going 7.0 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) off six hits and struck out eight and walked two. Frazier (3-4) threw 109 pitches in picking up his second WCC win of the year.

Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) kept the Toreros off the board in the eighth. USD threatened with two runners aboard, but with one out Karch picked off a runner at second and struck out the final batter he faced to preserve Pepperdine’s 7-4 lead. Michael Swanner (Cardif, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) tossed a scoreless, hitless ninth save of the year. Swanned struck out Torero All-American Kris Bryant to start off the frame.

Moyer ended his night 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Yamaguchi finished 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. Davidson went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Michael Wagner (1-4) suffered the loss for USD, allowing seven runs (six earned) off eight hits and struck out four with three walks.

Pepperdine takes on San Diego in game two Saturday night. First pitch against the Toreros is set for 6:00 p.m. at Fowler Park in a game featuring a live audio broadcast via WaveCasts.
