RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The standard nine innings wasn't enough Tuesday night, as the Waves needed every one of their eight runs and 15 hits to support the bullpen and beat host UC Riverside, 8-7 Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.

In a wild game, which had nine ties or lead changes, one runner be called out for leaving a base early and saw each team send six different pitchers to the hill, the Waves were finally able to strike a decisive blow and hold onto the lead in the 11th inning. In the top half of the frame, junior second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) hit a towering blast over the left field fence to put the Waves ahead. Sophomore righty Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), who had come in to get the Waves out of a jam in the bottom of the 10th, worked around a leadoff single in the 11th to put up a zero and tally the win--his second of the season.

The Waves opened the scoring in the top of the second, as Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) reached on a two-out walk, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College). Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison University) followed with a booming double to right field, but the ball hopped over the fence, holding Cooper at third and costing the Waves a run.

The Highlanders were able to get out of the inning with the damage minimized and went on to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Waves answered in the top of the sixth, when Forgatch plated Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) with an RBI single to put the score at 2-1.

Waves' starter Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) put in a strong 6.2 innings of work, allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out four, but a two-out walk and a game-tying double chased him in the 7th. He did not factor into the decision. Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) got out of the inning and kept the score tied.

Karch ran into trouble in the eighth, though, as he gave up a leadoff walk that came around to score immediately on a double. The Highlanders plated a second run in the inning and went into the ninth with a 4-2 lead--their first of the game.

The Waves bats would answer in the top of the ninth, though, as Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) started a one-out rally with an infield single. Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) followed with another single. Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and Sever each followed with RBI singles to drive in runs to tie the game, 4-4.

Next came the most bizarre twist in a game full of them.

With Davidson on second and Sever on third, Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) came up with one out and a chance to give the Waves the lead. He hit a medium-depth fly ball to center field, and it looked as though Davidson had eluded the tag at the plate, but he was called out on appeal, the third base umpire stating he'd left the base early, leaving the score tied at four headed to the bottom of the ninth.

Freshman lefty Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) came in and worked around a one-out walk to throw up a zero in the ninth and leave the game tied 4-4 headed into the 10th.

The Waves rode the momentum into a three-run 10th, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Forgatch and an RBI single from Vincej, turning a 7-4 lead over to the bullpen.

However a combination of Brown and two other relievers walked the bases loaded, gave up a pair of RBI singles and an RBI groundout, and game was tied once again--this time at seven--before Sever left the yard and Swanner sealed the win.

Sever, Vincej and Forgatch each finished with three hits, and collectively, the trio had six of the Waves' eight RBIs.

The Waves return to West Coast Conference play Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium as they host the Portland Pilots.
