MORAGA, Calif. - Aaron Brown tossed eight innings and Austin Davidson posted four hits as the No. 29-ranked Pepperdine baseball team used a six-run eighth inning to break open a one-run ballgame Sunday afternoon, defeating Saint Mary's 8-1 on the road.

The win gave the Waves a three game sweep of the Gaels in what was an early-season battle of the top two teams in the WCC standings. Pepperdine now sits alone in first place in the conference.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) and Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) led off the game with back-to-back hits, the second of which was a double by Davidson that gave the Waves runners on second and third. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) executed the sacrifice fly to bring home Moyer and then Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) singled to left to bring home Davidson. That would be the Waves' only offense until the eighth inning.

Leading 2-1, Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) would give the Waves a more comfortable advantage in the eighth, doubling to left to drive in a pair of runs. Fornaci would score on a passed ball after advancing to third on a wild pitch to give Pepperdine a 5-1 lead. The inning continued with the Waves putting two more runners on thanks to an error and then Moyer's second hit of the day, and Davidson brought both home on his second double of the afternoon. Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) helped his own cause and capped the inning with a run-scoring double to make it 8-1.

Brown held the Gaels hitless until the fourth inning, when the home team finally broke through with its only run of the game. Saint Mary's starter Anthony Gonsolin singled up the middle to record the only RBI of the day for the Gaels.

Brown would toss 8.0 innings, giving up five hits and just one unearned run. He struck out seven batters and walked just two. It was his fourth start this season where he threw at least eight innings, as the lefty moves to 6-1 on the year.

Davidson posted a four-hit day, going 4-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and one walk. Anderson was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Fourteen different players saw action in the game and eight recorded base-knocks on the way to 15 hits for Pepperdine.

John Ramage was the only Gael to record multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Gonsolin took the loss for Saint Mary's, falling to 1-2.

The win moves the Waves to 24-7 overall, 10-2 WCC and drops Saint Mary's to 13-17, 5-4 WCC. The Waves face USC at home on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup next week before welcoming BYU for a three-game series.
