Moscot Takes No-Hitter into the Bottom of the Ninth as the Waves Defeat Saint Mary's 7-1
April 5, 2012
MORAGA, Calif. - Starter Jon Moscothad a career day at Louis Gusto Field on Thursday afternoon, taking a no-hitter 8.2 innings and tallying a career high 10 strikeouts as Pepperdine baseball defeated Saint Mary's 7-1 in game one of a three-game West Coast Conference series.
Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) had a career day, carrying a perfect game through five innings and a no-hitter through 8.2 innings before surrendering his first hit. The junior allowed only one unearned run and tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts. This is the second time this season that he has gone the distance in a start.
At the plate third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The home run was his second of the season. Overall the Waves (18-12, 2-2 WCC) tallied seven runs on nine hits, with seven Waves collecting at least one hit.
The Waves got on the board over the Gaels (14-14, 1-6 WCC) in the third inning and never looked back. Left fielder Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) started out the inning by reaching base on a throwing error by the Gaels' shortstop. Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) collected his team-leading 10th double of the season to advance Langlois to third. Catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) doubled to centerfield to drive in the second run of the inning to give the Waves a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning the Waves doubled their lead over the Gaels to 4-0 on Davidson's two-run home run to right field.
In the bottom of the sixth Moscot lost his perfect game as he hit Gaels' shortstop Ricky Boas with two outs. He collected himself to preserve the no-hitter and get the third out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh the Waves mounted a two-out rally as Silverstein was hit by a pitch and Sever reached on a throwing error by the Gaels' shortstop. That was the end of Gaels' starter Ben Griset day as he gave way to reliever Jordan Mills. Mills balked to walk in Silverstein from third and first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) doubled to drive in the second run of the inning. Right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) followed with an RBI single down the left field line to give the Waves a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Moscot continued his career day as he took his no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth. He got Gaels' pinch hitter Greg Ditmer to ground out for the first out of the inning. The next batter Donald Collins got on base by virtue of an error by Meyer at first base, but Moscot would get Gaels' outfielder Cole Norton to fly out to center field for the second out of the inning. Collins got into scoring position on a wild pitch by Moscot. The next hitter, the designated hitter Troy Channing broke up Moscot's no hitter with two-outs as he singled down the left field line to score the Gaels' lone unearned run of the game. Channing was thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double to end the game.
The Waves and Gaels will be back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. PT at Louis Gusto Field.
