SPOKANE, Wash.- Pepperdine baseball split a doubleheader at Gonzaga to open West Coast Conference play on Saturday evening. Despite a furious comeback attempt in the bottom eighth inning in game one, the Waves fell to the Bulldogs 10-7. The squad came right back in game two and weathered 12 innings to pull out the 7-6 extra innings victory to tie the series at 1-1.

Right fielder/pitcher Aaron Brown came up big for the Waves (17-10) at the plate and on the mound in the game two victory. The freshman blasted his first career home run in the sixth inning and scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 12th. He also threw the final 3.2 innings of the game, including pitching out of a tricky jam in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. He also struck out four Bulldogs (17-7).

Shortstop Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) led the Waves with four RBIs in the victory, while centerfielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) delivered the game-winning run with a double in the top of the 12th inning.

In game one, after taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Miles Silverstein's(Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas, Calif.) third home run of the season, the Bulldogs countered with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Waves fought back to take a 7-6 lead after scoring five runs, three coming off Floyd Given's(Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) first home run of the season in the top of the eighth. However, the Bulldogs answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-7 lead.

After Silverstein's home run in the first and a single by Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) in the first inning, Bulldog starter Tyler Olson held the Waves to only two more hits and no runs through the next five innings.

The Zags would get to the Waves, scoring one run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

With the Waves down 6-1 in the top of the seventh, the team strung together some hits to plate a run and cut the deficit to four, 6-2.

Reliever Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) entered in the bottom of the seventh and shut out the Bulldogs, getting two fly outs and a strikeout. Starter Jon Moscot(Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) finished his day with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing six runs (five earned) off 12 hits. He also collected three strikeouts.

The Waves turned the tables on starter Olson in the top of the eighth, as the Waves mounted a two-out rally. Sever, who started off the inning with a single, would stay put at first as the next two Waves made outs. Designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison Univ.) advanced Sever to second on a single and started the rally as third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) loaded the bases with a single of his own. Olson's day was finished, as David Bigalow entered in relief for the Zags.

Pinch hitter Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif/Canada College) reached first on a fielding error by the Bulldogs' shortstop and two runs scored for the Waves. Pinch hitter Floyd Given(Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) followed and picked an excellent time for hit his first home run of the season, a three-run bomb to put the Waves ahead, 7-6.

The Zags wasted no time coming back, scoring four runs off the Waves' bullpen in the bottom half of the eighth to take a 10-7 that stood to give them the victory in game one.

In game two, the Waves came back strong behind starter Scott Frazier, (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) who had a solid outing, going 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and allowing only one run. He also had a career high 10 strikeouts.

Frazier allowed the Zags one run in the bottom of the first inning, but shored things up to effectively shut down their offense through the next six innings.

The Waves tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third as the Waves strung together some hits and Sever drove in his first run of the game.

Sever struck again in the fifth inning, as he doubled down the left field line to drive in another run and give the Waves their first lead of game two, 2-1.

In the top of the sixth the Waves added to their lead as Brown slammed his first home run of his career, a solo shot to right center to give the Waves a 3-1 lead.

The Waves seemed to break open the game in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs courtesy of two more RBIs from Sever and another from first baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) to extend their lead , 6-1.

Waves' starter Frazier gave way to reliever Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS). The Zags mounted a comeback, adding one run in the bottom of the eighth and four in bottom of the ninth to tie things up 6-6. With the game-winning run in scoring position, Brown came in from right field to relieve Brian McIlhenny(Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) to get the final two outs and send the game into extra innings.

Brown was lights out through extra innings, throwing all three, allowing only one hit and collecting four strikeouts, three of those coming in the bottom of the 12th to solidify the win for the Waves.

The eventual game-winning run came in the top of the 12th for the Waves. With one out, Brown reached base on an error by the shortstop and was able to steal second to get into scoring position. The next Wave batter struck out to bring up Gelalich. The centerfielder lined a double down the left field line to score Brown from second.

The Waves and Bulldogs will return to the Patterson Complex for the rubber match game, set for 1 p.m. PT on Sunday.
