PROVO, Utah – Pepperdine scored early and late to take the West Coast Conference series finale against Brigham Young with a 9-6 win Saturday afternoon at Larry H. Miller Field. After building big leads in the previous two games without holding on for the result, the Waves (15-11, 6-3 WCC) were able to finish the deal this time against the Cougars (13-14, 2-4 WCC).

After connecting for four home runs in the first two games of the series, the Cougars held Pepperdine in the yard, allowing just one extra base hit. Fortunately for the Waves, their hits were timely and clutch. Six players recorded at least a pair of hits.

Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) continued his torrid pace, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) provided timely hits in key moments, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) both turned in 2-for-4 days at the plate with Davidson connecting on his ninth double of the year. Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) drove in a pair of runs on a 1-for5 day.

Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) struck out a career-high nine batters in 7.2 innings in his longest start for the Waves. Brown (2-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits in collecting his second straight victory. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) worked out of some trouble to earn his sixth save of the year and struck out three Cougars in the process.

Pepperdine jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, but BYU tied it with three in the home half of the frame. The Waves edged ahead with a single run in the third and never trailed again, adding a four-run fourth for an 8-3 lead. BYU answered with two in the bottom of the fourth and closed the gap to within three with one run in the eighth but could get no closer.

Pepperdine returns to action when it concludes its five-game road trip Tuesday April 2 at UC Santa Barbara. Game time against the Gauchos is set for 3:00 p.m.
