March 28, 2013
PROVO, Utah – Austin Davidson and Kolten Yamaguchi both homered, but Pepperdine’s bullpen struggled late in an 8-3 loss at Brigham Young Thursday night at Larry H. Miller Field. The Waves (14-10, 5-2 WCC) see their six game winning streak snapped as the Cougars (12-13, 1-3 WCC) collect their first league win of the 2013 season.
Trailing 1-0, the Pepperdine struck for a pair in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) singled with one out, setting the stage for the reigning WCC Player of the Week. Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) sent a 1-1 pitch to right field for his third home run of the season.
Pepperdine’s lead did not last long as BYU tied the score 2-2 in the home half of the third as a run scored on a double play.
Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) gave Pepperdine a 3-2 lead in the fourth, sending his fourth home run of the season to right field. It was the fourth homer of the season in 38 at-bats for Yamaguchi.
Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) turned in a strong start for the Waves and after allowing a run in the third, threw four scoreless innings, scattering three singles. Miller went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs off seven hits and struck out four and walked one.
Once Miller departed, the wheels came off in the eighth as Brigham Young scored six runs off three relievers and sent 12 to the plate. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) suffered the loss allowing three runs off three hits in 1/3 inning.
Sam Meyer (Los Altos Hills, Calif./St. Francis HS) went 2-for-4, including his eighth double of the season, but was the lone Wave with multiple hits.
