SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Pepperdine broke open a 6-6 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and fought off a late rally to down No. 21 Cal Poly 8-6 Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium. The Waves (14-9) win their sixth consecutive game in the first of two meetings this season against the Mustangs (17-6).

With the victory, Pepperdine improved to 4-4 overall against top-25 opponents and an impressive 4-3 on the road against ranked foes.

Pepperdine loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Making his first start since March 3, Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) tapped a nubber in front of the plate. The throw home to get the force was wild allowing two runs to score for an 8-6 Waves lead.

Cal Poly promptly returned the favor and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on a hit batsman, a double and a throwing error. Pepperdine closer Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) worked out of the jam earning his fifth save of the year and third in five days with two strikeouts and a fly ball to right field.

Pepperdine built leads of 2-0, 3-2 and 6-4, but Cal Poly battled back each time and took its lone lead in the fourth inning at 4-3. The Waves scored three times on five hits in the sixth for a 6-4 lead and, after surrendering two runs in the bottom of the eighth, used two walks, an error and a single to manufacture two unearned runs breaking a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth.

Eric Karch (Fresno Calif./Clovis West HS), the third of four Pepperdine pitchers used in the game, earned his team-leading fifth win of the season, allowing two runs and three hits in 2.2 innings. The loss went to Michael Holback (2-1).

Bryan Langlois
(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) got the Waves on the board in the first inning with his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to center. Langlois finished 2-for4 with two runs and a walk. The Waves have now homered in three consecutive games.

Pepperdine outhit Cal Poly 13-9, led by third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) with three singles. Moyer finished 2-for-5 with the team’s first triple of 2013, while Kolten Yamaguchi (Knoa, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) doubled. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Pepperdine travels to Provo, Utah for a three-game West Coast Conference series against Brigham Young, starting Thursday, March 28. First pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m. (PT) from Miller Park.
