Waves Fall 10-5 at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday
March 27, 2012
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF.- The Pepperdine baseball team took an early lead over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, but would be unable to maintain it, falling 10-5 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Gauchos (12-11) would strike first, getting one run to score in the bottom of the first, but the Waves (16-9) would come through in the top of the third to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead. It would not be enough, however, as the Gauchos would score five in the bottom of the fourth to break open the game. Sophomore Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) took his first loss of the season, going 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) drove in two of the Waves' five runs as he went 1-for-2 with a double. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) was 2-for-3 with one RBI and first baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) drove in the Waves final two runs.
Down 1-0 with two out and two on in the top of the fourth, the Waves struck as Langlois hit a double to left center that bounced off the wall and cleared the bases to give the Waves the 2-1 lead. Next up was Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS), who walked to bring up the top of the order in Vincej. Vincej would drive in the third run of the inning as he singled to shallow center field to score Langlois from second.
However the Waves' 3-1 lead would be short lived, as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the third would get a single for the Gauchos and third baseman Marc Venning turned on a ball for a two-run home run down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. The designated hitter Bryce Tafelski hit a single up the middle to score two more and chase Waves' starter Maurer. Out of the pen would come Andrew Alvarez(Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) for the Waves. Gaucho first baseman Greg Mahle got a base knock up the middle to score the final run of the inning as Alvarez got the final out of the inning on the next batter.
The Waves went quietly in the top of the fifth and allowed the Gauchos one more run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 7-3.
To try and get things going in the top of the sixth, Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) pinch hit for Langlois and hit single up the middle with one out. The Waves were unable to put a run on the board however, as the 7-3 score continued to stand.
The top of the seventh looked promising for the Waves, as third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) took a leadoff walk. Again the Waves were unable to get things going, as they went down quietly in the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh the Gauchos struck again, as Alvarez struggled with his control, walking four straight Gaucho batters with one out to put the score at 8-3, UC Santa Barbara. Brian McIlhenny(Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) came in to relieve Alvarez and struck out the next batter and got a ground ball to get out of the inning.
The Gauchos would put another run on the board in the bottom of the eighth and the Waves would answer with two runs of their own in the top of the ninth, courtesy of a two-run single by Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS). That would be it for the Waves, however, as they fell 10-5.
The Waves open up West Coast Conference play on Friday, March 30 as they travel to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga in a three-game set. First pitch of game one is set for 6 p.m. PT on Friday.
