Waves Take Midweek Tilt with Long Beach State in Dominating 12-2 Fashion
March 20, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's bats came up big Tuesday afternoon as the Waves scored a season-high 12 runs off 14 hits in a 12-2 defeat of Long Beach State at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS), second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS), left fielder Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) third baseman Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) and catcher Kolten Yamaguchi(Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) combined for 10 of the Waves' 14 hits as they each had two knocks on the day.
The Waves (16-5) also took advantage of the Dirtbags' (6-13) lack of control on the mound, as they hit six Wave batters on the day to walk in three runs.
On the hill for the Waves, starter Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) went 6.0 innings, allowing no runs and scattering four hits. He also added one strikeout.
Things were quiet through the first 2.5 innings, but in the bottom of the third, the Waves were able to get to Dirtbag starter Nick Sabo. Silverstein started things off with a one-out single and Yamaguchi followed with a single of his own through the left side. Vincej would drive in Silverstein with a base knock. Center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. That would be the end of the day for Sabo, who would be relieved by Matt Johnson. Johnson gave up a single to Sever who drove in two runs to put the Waves up 3-0. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS), would single to load the bases. Next up pinch hitter Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) would be hit by a pitch to score a run and put the Waves ahead 4-0. The next batter, right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) would also be hit by the pitch to walk in the fifth run of the inning. Finally Langlois would get a base hit for the sixth run of the inning.
The 6-0 lead would hold up through the bottom of the fifth, where the Waves would have another big inning off of the Dirtbags' Edgar Gomez, plating five runs and batting around the lineup for the second time today. A Silverstein single with two-on and one out would drive in two runs and a single to left center from Gelalich would drive in two more. With the bases loaded and two out, Given would be hit by the pitch for the second time in the game to walk in the fifth run of the inning. The Waves would head to the top of the sixth with an 11-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Waves would plate one more run on an RBI groundout from Yamaguchi to score Langlois.
The Waves took a shutout into the top of the ninth, but the Dirtbags would score twice to get on the board and put the final score at 12-2.
Next up for the Waves is a weekend series with No. 10 Texas A&M. Game one of the three-game series is set for 3 p.m. PT on Friday, March 23.
