March 18, 2014
IRVINE, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got a bounce-back win over UC Irvine Tuesday night, defeating the Anteaters 6-0 on the road.
The Waves, who were coming off a tough 1-2 weekend against Pacific, capitalized on a pair of UCI errors to break the game open in the fifth inning and got a big time performance on the mound from Matt Maurer.
“I told the guys that this is the team we are capable of being every day,” said head coach Steve Rodriguez. “We took it to them early and kept the pressure on the entire game. It was a great effort by the guys.”
Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) singled to lead off the second and after Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) sent him to third on a subsequent base-hit, Langlois scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS).
The Waves tacked on three more runs courtesy of an Anteater error that extended the fifth inning. Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) reached first due to the throwing error and then was driven home on a two-out bloop single by Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS). Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) followed with a double to left field, driving home Caruso and then scoring on a throwing error by the UCI outfielder.
Already leading 4-0, the Waves scored a pair of runs in the sixth, chasing UCI starter Evan Manarino in the process. Brown and Anderson each recorded RBI in the frame.
Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) tossed six scoreless innings in the game, giving up five hits and one walk, while striking out six batters. The win moves Maurer to 2-1 on the year.
A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) took over for Maurer getting into trouble as he loaded the bases in the seventh, but got out of it with a ground ball double play to third base. The Waves also worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) coming in to get the final out. Blanchard got the final four outs of the game to close it out.
“We extended Maurer out a little bit with six innings today and he did a great job for us,” said Rodriguez. “We have a lot of faith in him and wanted to show that today. The offense came through as well, with Langlois and Brown having big days. Everybody contributed.”
Langlois went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the visitors and Brad Anderson drove in two runs. Langlois also scored twice in the game. Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Pepperdine had nine hits in the game.
The win moves the Waves to 14-6 on the year and drops UCI to 13-7. Pepperdine stays on the road this weekend, heading to Santa Clara for a three-game WCC series.
