Waves Top Columbia 3-1 Behind Strong Pitching Efforts
March 14, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team returned to Eddy D. Field Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to defeat Columbia 3-1 as Eric Karchpicked up the victory in his first start of the season.
Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) went 7.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits and tallying four strikeouts. Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth and threw a one-two-three ninth to solidify his second save of the season.
Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) continued his hot hitting as he knotched his sixth double of the year to drive in the Waves' first run in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) and left fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) both had good days from the plate, going 2-for-4 and driving in one run apiece.
The Lions (2-8) would get on the board first, plating a run in the top of the third, but the Waves would answer in the bottom half of the inning. Third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) would get on base by virtue of a fielder's choice. With one out, catcher Kolten Yamaguchi(Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) would sacrifice bunt Davidson over to second. With two outs, Vincej would hit a laser down the left field line for a double, scoring Davidson to tie the game up 1-1. The RBI was his 10th of the year.
The Waves (13-4) would again get to Lions' starter David Spinosa in the bottom of the sixth as Vincej would start things out getting hit by a pitch and would then advance to second on a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt from centerfielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) would move Vincej over to third. Sever would come through with a single through the right side to score Vincej and give the Waves their first lead of the day, 2-1. The RBI was his team-leading 17th of the season.
In the top of the eighth the Lions fought back and would have runners on the corners with just one out to end Karch's day for the Waves. Swanner, fresh off his first save of the season yesterday against UC Irvine at Dodger Stadium, would come in from the bullpen. The sophomore would pick off the Lions' runner at first base for the second out of the inning. He would then dig in and strike out their leadoff hitter Jon Eisen to end the inning and get the Waves through unscathed.
In the bottom of the eighth the Waves would plate an insurance run, taking advantage of the Lions' fielding errors. Gelalich would get on base by virtue of an error by the third baseman and then used his speed to go first to third on a passed ball. Cooper would come through with a single to score Gelalich to give the Waves a 3-1 lead.
Swanner would throw a one-two-three top of the ninth, with a strikeout to close out his second save in the last two games.
Pepperdine will be back out at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Friday, as they begin a three-game set with Kent State. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. PT.
